Monica’s environment has played a major role in the subject matter of her work.  Much of the interest in primitive Native American symbols and animal imagery comes quite naturally. Growing up on farmland near the Yakama Indian Reservation in Washington State, she attended school with the Yakamas’, and worshipped at a Catholic Mission bordering the reservation. “Home away from home” was a small cabin in the nearby Cascade Mountains which Monica used as an art studio.

About the Artist

Since discovering rock art several years ago at a location near the Snake River, Monica has researched petroglyph sites extensively in the United States, Mexico and the British Isles. She has also worked with researchers documenting newly discovered rock art sites in remote areas of the southwest U.S.

Monica and her husband live in the Blue Mountains of southeast Washington.  In this mountain environment, rich with inspiration, Monica pursues her artistic path.

Monica Stobie’s art explores the mystery and wonders of the world around her. Images of animal forms and primitive rock art messages reflect a reverence for her surroundings---both past and present.

Monica Stobie received her degree in Art Education in 1976 from Eastern Washington University. She taught art in middle school and high school for 15 years and has lectured at seminars in Washington and Oregon.  Twenty years ago, Monica retired from teaching to pursue art on a full-time basis.  Since then, her work has been exhibited in galleries and exhibitions throughout the West.
